Almas Penadas are a mythologycal creature present in Portuguese folclore, they're souls that have left matters unsolved during their life and are now stuck in Purgatory until said matters are solved.

MoodBoard

Here I gathered different elements and references that I thought would prove useful in the future. They were a good starting point but I rapidly strayed away from these images.

Thumbnails

Initially I didn't really have a planned end result for the character, I started of by imagining it a sort of spectral entity and, eventually, I shifted towards concepts I found more interesting.

Sketches

I think here is where It becomes more apparent the wide range of concepts I had in mind, as I sketched I realized that this creature looked hostile and "evil", adjectives you could not attribute to it. Because of that I ditched the whole skeletal image I was trying to develop and quickly created something more grounded and faithful.

Color Tests

While developing the colors for this creature I wanted a color scheme that would make them look old and decrepit, sickly and tormented.
